ARE YOU A FULL-SPECTRUM LEADER?

As an authentic, full spectrum leader, you must understand and master your own personal dynamics, along with the dynamics of the organization, team, business unit or division you lead. 

Being able to lead yourself and being effective at leading others are not one in the same. They require different skills and different levels of understanding. For starters, you must be able to lead yourself before you can effectively lead others. Leading an organization is more demanding than leading yourself. Leading an organization also requires an additional set of competencies and skills that are different from those required to lead yourself and others. 

As a full spectrum leader, you must demonstration all the attributes of the Seven Levels of Leadership Consciousness.  That means you must master:

  • Survival consciousness which you must demonstrate by creating an environment of financial security and physical safety for yourself and those you are responsible for leading.
  • Relationship consciousness which you must demonstrate by learning to communicate openly, and by creating a culture of caring and belonging that engenders employee and customer loyalty.
  • Self-esteem consciousness which you must demonstrate by measuring and monitoring progress towards your organization’s goals, and keeping the organization focused on quality and excellence, so that your employees feel a sense of pride in the organization’s performance, while at the same time pursue their own professional growth.
  • Transformation consciousness which you must demonstrate by becoming 100% responsible and accountable for your actions, learning to delegate appropriately, empowering your executives and managers, and encouraging them to pursue their personal growth.
  • Internal cohesion consciousness which you must demonstrate by finding a personal sense of purpose/mission in your life; creating a vision of the future that is a source of inspiration for everyone in your organization; and cultivating a climate of trust. 
  • External cohesion consciousness which you must demonstrate by actualizing your own sense of purpose through collaboration with external partners in strategic alliances, and enabling your employees, managers and executives to do the same. 
  • Service consciousness which you must demonstrate by aligning the needs of your organization with the needs of humanity and the planet and performing acts of selfless service with humility and compassion that support your employees, managers, and executives in doing the same.

WHAT ARE THE LEADERSHIP QUALITIES OF A FULL SPECTRUM LEADER AND WHY DO THEY MATTER?

There are seven levels of leadership development (or what some call leadership consciousness) involved in becoming a full spectrum leader. The first level is the Crisis Manager.  In this context, a Crisis Manager is focused on the pursuit of profit and shareholder value. His leadership style is directive, he is willing to take charge and able to manage adversity. His potentially limiting values are exploitation and over-control.

The second level of leadership development is Relationship Manager and her focus is on creating and nurturing relationships that support her group’s needs.  She fosters good communication between employees, customers and suppliers. Her potentially limiting leadership style is manipulating and blaming.

The third level of leadership development Performance Manager and these leaders are focused on being the best and implementing best practices with their teams or organizations.  Their objectives are productivity, efficiency, quality, systems, and processes.

The fourth level of leadership development is Facilitator/Influencer and her focus is on continuous renewal.  He promotes learning and innovation, He’s also a team builder and he empowers others.

The fifth level of leadership development is an Inspirational Leader whose focus is on developing the organizational community. She demonstrates the leadership qualities of promoting positivity and a creative culture.  She also promotes a shared vision and shared values within the organization.

The sixth level of leadership development is the Mentor/Partner Leader.  This leader is focused on coaching and collaborating internally and externally. Strategic alliances, employee fulfillment, and environmental stewardship are important to him.

The seventh and highest level of leadership development is the Visionary Leader.  This leader’s focus is on service to humanity.  He or she prefers a long-term perspective and is concerned about future generations and ethics.

The process of becoming a full spectrum leader involves developing leadership styles across the full spectrum of leadership development.
